The challenge
In case of Bio-Oil, the challenge was not a complete lack of brand awareness, but rather how a long-established brand could speak to consumers in a fresh and relevant way within a sensitive category. The topics of stretch marks, scars and uneven skin tone can easily become too rational or problem-focused, so the campaign needed to find a more supportive, empathetic tone.
There is a lot of communication noise in this category, and consumers are often sceptical about skincare claims. Therefore, when planning the campaign, the aim was not only to showcase the benefits of Bio-Oil, but also to position the brand in a more likeable, personal way that could be built upon in the long term.
The communication had to appeal to several target groups: those struggling with stretch marks, those concerned with scar care, expectant mothers, new mums and those seeking a more conscious skincare solution. The campaign therefore had to be structured as an educational, empathetic and target-group-specific system.
