The Vodafone City Centre Grand Prix was an iconic urban brand event that transformed the communication of the network modernisation into an experience that attracted nationwide attention. Progressive was tasked with the comprehensive planning and execution of this complex event: a 750-horsepower McLaren–Mercedes Formula 1 car had to be transported safely to Budapest city centre, in front of tens of thousands of spectators.

The challenge

The Vodafone City Centre Grand Prix was a unique brand event that served both to publicise Vodafone’s nationwide network modernisation and to revitalise the company’s sponsorship strategy. Instead of its previous festival sponsorship, the brand created its own, fully controlled series of events, the highlight of which was a Formula 1 car demonstration in the city centre. The complexity of the project is well illustrated by the fact that a 750-horsepower McLaren–Mercedes racing car had to be operated safely in Budapest’s historic city centre in front of tens of thousands of spectators. The four-day event took place along a 1.6-kilometre route at 10 central venues, attracting nearly 100,000 visitors. During the organisation, the strict technical and safety regulations of international motorsport had to be reconciled with the management of urban infrastructure, traffic restrictions, regulatory requirements and the interests of the local population.

For Progressive, the challenge was not only to organise a large-scale event, but also to communicate a technological milestone through an experience that was memorable in every respect and captured the nation’s attention.

The approach

During the comprehensive planning and organisation of the event, we established a complex event infrastructure capable of safely hosting a Formula 1 street demonstration in Budapest city centre. When designing the 1.6-kilometre circuit, we incorporated special safety features, rubber barriers, cordon systems and run-off areas, whilst taking into account the specific characteristics of the road surface, tram tracks, manhole covers and other urban features. We coordinated the construction work in close collaboration with the authorities, transport operators and international motorsport experts, ensuring that road closures and traffic diversions ran smoothly.

The centrepiece of the event was Jenson Button’s street parade in a McLaren–Mercedes Formula 1 car. We organised the programme in accordance with international safety protocols: from the preliminary track inspection to the multi-stage demonstrations, we coordinated every detail with the racing team’s experts. The motorsport experience was enhanced by local drivers and demonstrations, whilst we set up interactive zones and simulators at various points across the city centre and organised family-friendly activities. The four-day festival offered nearly 40 hours of free programming, which was made accessible to a wider audience than ever before through live national television coverage, innovative online content and state-of-the-art digital solutions. The event thus became at once a spectacular brand experience, a technological demonstration and a major celebration of Hungarian motorsport.

The results

The Vodafone City Centre Grand Prix was not only a resounding success on the day of the event, but also became a defining milestone in the long-term history of experiential marketing and urban motor racing events in Hungary. Built on the global partnership between Vodafone and McLaren-Mercedes, the campaign exemplarily combined brand-building, technological innovation and a large-scale public experience, which was recognised by the industry: the campaign received an Effie nomination and was also shortlisted for the Lollipop advertising awards.

Building on the success of the event, Hungaroring Sport Zrt. launched the ‘Nagy Futam’ event series in 2013, which went on to become iconic, bringing the biggest names in motorsport to Budapest city centre year after year. The series featured global stars such as Valtteri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Kimi Räikkönen, proving that the 2012 event laid the foundations for a series that would prove successful in the long term and attract international attention.

Bringing a Formula 1 car to Budapest city centre is not only a spectacular creative idea, but also an extremely complex event-organisation challenge. In the case of the Vodafone Downtown Grand Prix, every detail – from track design through to safety zones and consultations with the authorities, right through to the spectator experience – had to run like clockwork.
